In the pursuit of truths

And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” Genesis 3:22

The Bible gives no indication about how long it took for Adam and Eve to be deceived and partake of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, defying God in the process, and earning exclusion from the tree of life. If it was 10 years or 1,000 years since they were created and related to God unfettered by sin the results were legion. Yet it seems to me that it can be distilled into a single, awful condition.

Humanity is now in pursuit of truths.

Before we fell, as we related to God, we pursued him. Singularly. All of our actions and activities endeavored toward a single point and goal. It was a pursuit of the truth. Or, to put it another way, The Truth. Our knowledge of good and evil rested in what the architect of everything seen and unseen was revealing to us. We found our joy, satisfaction, and revelry in him and him alone. As soon as we "ascended" to a putrid godhood embracing that which we were not created to hold, we found an alternative to the only source of truth. And as our eyes were opened to things that God never intended them to we ran and we hid.

You see, The Truth had no part in our newfound truths. As we sought to define good and evil for ourselves and deepened our understanding of the world beyond our capacity to use that knowledge as God intended, we found our truths much more to our liking. We pursued them, individually, looking past each other and certainly not in his direction. The breakdown is complete and the depravity of it all has found depths that were seemingly unfathomable such a short time ago.

Is it any wonder we cannot even agree on what certain words mean anymore? Is it any wonder that God excluded us from eating from the tree of life preserving our eternal persistence in this sad condition? Truth will be pursued perfectly, not this side of heaven mind you, but he will be. At no cost to us Jesus' birth, life, death, and resurrection has secured our eternal destiny.

May we taste a grain of the salt of this pursuit now. My God, we need it don't we. You know we do, Dad. You know all too well.
