USB Linux Install Update #1

I had a hard time getting any type of persistence out of my install of Ubuntu 7.04 so I decided to go for a USB install of 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) instead using these directions:

It went much smoother than the 7.04 install so that was a nice surprise. Also, there was a separate procedure to make the 7.04 release persistent and the persistence thing is fixed with the 7.10 version.

I have it all up and running and am able to read data from and save data to the USB drive now. I have noticed it runs a little slower than the 7.04 release did, but the added persistence is more than worth the speed difference.

I have a noisy Dell GX280 at work and I was looking for solutions to the issue when I ran across the toggling of the hyperthreading option in the BIOS as a possible solution. It turns out that hyperthreading is turned off by default and it wsa reported that either turning it on or off results in the quieting of the PC. There were conflicting reports on this so I decided to try it. It didn't work. What it did do, however, was allow me to multi-task to a greater degree when I have a single process that is consuming a great deal of processor cycles. I found that a processor-intensive application will not slow down my ability to check email with Outlook or surf the web with Firefox to any great degree. As processor- and memory-intensive as these applications are I found them to be much more sluggish under the conditions I have described when hyperthreading was turned off. The spousal gift of self

I am just now getting over the flu that I have had for the better part of a week. I am actually now able to concentrate and get some substantial professional and personal work done.   I hate being sick. So much of it is so frustrating because there is so much I want to do, so much of what I want to be, and I am not able to do and be that when I am ill. I know I need to embrace it when it comes. At the very least it illustrates to me life in this fallen world and brings into sharper focus the spousal purpose of my body. You see, I long to give of myself to my wife. That self gift, that love gift, is made manifest through my body. My invisible desires are now visible.
